8 Herpes Viruses

Like other herpesviruses, its informal name (KSHV) is used interchangeably with its ICTV name. The seroprevalence of HHV-8 varies significantly geographically, with infection rates in northern European, southeast Asian, and Caribbean countries being between 2-4, in Mediterranean countries at approximately 10, and in sub-Saharan African countries at approximately 40. The herpes family of viruses includes 8 different viruses that affect human beings. The viruses are known by numbers as human herpes virus 1 through 8 (HHV1 – HHV8).

Of the more than 100 known herpesviruses, 8 routinely infect only humans: herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, human herpesvirus 6 (variants A and B) , human herpesvirus 7, and Kaposi’s sarcoma virus or human herpesvirus 8. Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) seroprevalence among the general population in the United States is 1 to 5. Human herpes virus-8 infection among pregnant women and their children: results from the Sardinia-IDDM Study 2. (7) This chapter includes a review of the virology and epidemiology of HHV-8 and its relationship to the development of KS and other AIDS-related neoplasms. As with all herpesviruses, HHV-8 expresses some genes during latency, whereas others are expressed during the lytic phase of replication.

Herpesviruses

8. Human herpes virus 8 (HHV8 or it can be called KSHV – see below). Unlike other viruses, HHV-8 encodes several human homologues including cytokines (interleukin-6, macrophage inflammatory proteins, interferon-regulatory factors) and regulatory genes (cyclin D, G-protein coupled receptor, etc). In addition, HHV-8 infection results in latent infection; therefore, conventional assays detecting plaques caused by lytic infection in cells is not available for measuring the titer of virus like many other herpesviruses. HHV-8 Information on Human herpesvirus 8 (Kaposi’s sarcoma-associate herpes virus) incliuding symptoms, diagnosis, transmission, and treatment.

Thus, detection of human herpes virus 8 in fixed tissues would be diagnostically useful. Recently, a monoclonal antibody to human herpes virus 8 latent nuclear antigen-1 has become commercially available for immunohistochemical analysis. Mandatory testing includes screening for several viruses and bacteria, including: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-I and -II, West Nile Virus, and syphilis. Eight types of herpesviruses infect humans (see Herpesviruses That Infect Humans). Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) , also known as Kaposi sarcomaassociated herpesvirus (KSHV) , can cause certain cancers.

Our Viruses

Herpes viruses are a leading cause of human viral disease, second only to influenza and cold viruses. Human herpes virus 8 (Kaposi’s sarcoma-associate herpes virus). The human herpes virus 8 (HHV8) encoded viral FLICE (Fas-associating protein with death domainlike interleukin-1converting enzyme) inhibitory protein (vFLIP) is believed to protect cells against death receptormediated apoptosis. As part of a separate ongoing study of the signaling pathway that the herpes virus uses to enter cells, Herold asked Jacobs’s lab to engineer a mutant with gD deleted. 8 Terrible Games That People Inexplicably Have Nostalgia For. HHV-8, also known as Kaposi sarcomaassociated herpes virus (KSHV) , has been found in nearly all tumors in patients with Kaposi sarcoma (KS).
