Cold Sore In Eye Symptoms

This is the same virus that causes cold sores on the lips. The cold sore virus is a different strain of herpes than the one associated with sexually transmitted disease; ocular herpes is not an STD. Cold sores, however, no matter where they occur, may come back. This type of herpes virus can cause inflammation and scarring of the cornea that sometimes is referred to as a cold sore on the eye. It is important to remember that cold sores are a symptom of ongoing infection rather than primary infection. Cold Sores

Herpes keratitis is a viral infection of the eye caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Type I is the most common and primarily infects the face, causing the familiar cold sore or fever blister. This infection can produce a painful sore on the eyelid or surface of the eye and cause inflammation of the cornea, the transparent tissue that covers the front of the eye. It may be important to see a physician if your cold sore doesn’t heal on its own, if the symptoms are severe and difficult to treat or they keep recurring, if you develop eye symptoms or have a pre-existing condition that has compromised your immune system.
