If your child has cold sores, it’s important to teach him or her how to keep from spreading them to others. The Royal College of Midwives recommends that anyone with a cold sore or symptoms of an impending outbreak should avoid kissing a baby as HSV is most virulent when the skin is broken.

Cold Sore Virus Leads To Baby’s Death

Newborn infants can become infected with herpes virus during pregnancy, during labor or delivery, or after birth. To prevent transmitting the virus, caregivers who have a cold sore should wear a surgical mask and wash their hands carefully before coming in contact with an infant. Cold sores will usually go away on their own. Apply an over-the-counter cold sore ointment for comfort. If the sores are painful, give your child an analgesic such as acetaminophen. Most cold sores heal on their own. Children age 2 and older can be treated with Zilactin-L Liquid, Orajel Baby, and Anbesol. Abreva is for people age 12 and older, so talk to your doctor before using it for a younger child. When a child’s mouth hurts, it makes it tough to eat or drink. General crankiness usually comes along, too. Cold sores and canker sores are common causes of lip and mouth pain. Am writing this after reading a (very confusing! ) thread in the news section. Apparently a new born baby can die of the cold sore virus and I get the impression (perhaps wrongly) that you should not allow anyone who carries the cold sore virus to kiss your newborn (even if they have no cold sores at the time).
