Shingles (Herpes Zoster) : Questions answered about the Herpes Zoster Vaccine. It can be administered concurrently with all other live and inactivated vaccines, including those routinely recommended for persons in 60 years and older age group, such as influenza and pneumococcal vaccines.

Alphaherpesvirus; Herpes Simplex Virus; HSV; Varicella Zoster Virus; VZV; Immunity; Pathogenesis. Herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1, HSV-2) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) are related human alphaherpesviruses that cause common, self-resolving diseases of the skin or mucosa, and concurrently establish a persistent latent infection of neuronal nuclei in the sensory ganglia innervating the peripheral site of infection. It is caused by reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus (VZV) decades after initial VZV infection is established. As with other members of the herpesvirus family, VZV is noninfectious in its latent form but can reactivate at a later time to form intact virions in the involved sensory neurons. If simultaneous administration is not possible, zoster vaccine can be administered at any time before or after an inactivated vaccine, but at least 4 weeks before or after another live, attenuated vaccine (209). The diagnosis of herpes zoster virus encephalitis is based on clinical history, examination, neuroradiological imaging (magnetic resonance imaging andor computed tomography scan) , cerebrospinal fluid analysis and identification of the pathogen in cerebrospinal fluid by polymerase chain reaction amplification andor anti-herpes zoster virus immunoglobulin G antibody in cerebrospinal fluid. We report here an immunocompetent patient with multiple intracerebral hemorrhages as a complication of HZV encephalitis, who also had concurrent herpes zoster rash in a dermatomal distribution over his trunk and bilateral pneumonia.

Publication Concurrent Herpes Zoster and Varicella. So, in this article, I’ll limit the discussion to herpes simplex and herpes zoster. At least one study has reported favorable results when treating herpes simplex keratitis in patients who concurrently suffer from dry eye. The herpes zoster virus is the same varicella agent that causes chicken pox in its initial infection. Co-reactivation of varicella zoster virus and herpes simplex virus with disseminated cutaneous lesions in a lymphoma patient AS Krishnaram, Yamini Sachan, G Geetha Rani Department of Dermatology, Madurai Medical College, Madurai, Tamilnadu, India Date of Web Publication21-Aug-2013. Concurrent herpes simplex and varicella-zoster infection in an immunocompromised patient. Concurrent appearance of herpes zoster and varicella. It is rare and has been reported in immunocompromised patients, probably because these patients are predisposed to infection and because the clinical features in immunocompromised patients are more severe and extensive. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) may cause latent infection of the same peripheral nerve ganglia. However, there are no large studies addressing the frequency of concurrent HSVVZV PCR positivity from the same anatomic location. Upper respiratory tract infection symptoms (preceding or concurrent). We present here a patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage who also had concurrent dermatomal herpes zoster rash and whose cerebral angiogram showed findings consistent with small and medium-sized vessel arteritis.
