How Herpes Is Spread Orally

Transmission of Oral Herpes. Oral herpes is usually caused by HSV-1. HSV-1 is the most prevalent form of herpes simplex virus, and infection is most likely to occur during preschool years. HSV-1 causes cold sores on the mouth, and up to 80 of the population has this virus. However, HSV-1 may also be transmitted to the genitals through oralgenital sex and about 40 of genital herpes is caused by HSV-1.

Oral herpes is transmitted through direct contact between the contagious area and broken skin (a cut or break) and mucous membrane tissue (such as the mouth or genitals). Oral sex is more of an issue for HSV-1 transmission from mouth to genitals, and indeed, HSV-1 is a fast-growing cause of genital herpes.

Oral Herpes: Are Cold Sores Contagious?

HSV-1 is spread through contact with saliva, including kissing and mouth-to-genital contact (oral sex). HSV-2 is usually transmitted by direct genital-to-genital or genital-to-anal contact. HSV-2 is commonly found in the genital area, but it can be passed to the mouth through oral sex. It is uncommon for HSV-2 to be found on the lips, but it is becoming more common to find HSV-1 in the genital area.

Herpes Herpes is transmitted by skin to skin contact. Occasionally, oral-to-genital contact may spread oral herpes to the genitals (and vice versa). For this reason, people with active herpes lesions on or around the mouth or on the genitals should avoid oral sex. Genital herpes is transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Transmission can happen even if genitals only touch infected skin, and no penetration occurs. And so what we’re seeing is oral transmission that’s primarily due to transmitting HSV-1 from mouth to genitals. So about 50 percent of the new genital herpes infections that we’re seeing in the young adults now are due to HSV-1.

Herpes Simplex Virus

You probably already know that HSV-1 is as easy to spread as it is tough to fight. At any stage of an outbreak, when you kiss your loved ones, especially on the mouth, you’re very likely to pass on the virus. Herpes is spread through contact with a skin lesion (s) or mucosa and the secretions from vagina, penis, or anus and oral fluid with someone who is infected with the virus. HSV-1 is typically spread by contact with infected saliva, while HSV-2 is usually spread sexually or via the mother’s genital tract to her newborn baby. HSV-1 more commonly affects the area around the mouth, while HSV-2 is more likely to affected the genital area, but both viruses can affect either region. Herpes is transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact. Herpes appear most commonly on the genitals or mouth. (AAD) While HSV-2 infections are spread by coming into contact with a herpes sore, the AAD reports that most people get HSV-1 from an infected person who is asymptomatic, or does not have sores. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) which shows as blisters or sores on the genitals. Cold sores on the mouth can spread the virus to the genitals during oral sex. It is more common for oral HSV-1 to be transmitted to the genitals through oral sex, than it is for HSV-2 to be transmitted to the mouth. If a person has oral herpes (cold sores) , and performs oral sex on the partner, it is possible for that person to transmit the virus to the genitals from this action, and vice versa. However, genital herpes can also be caused by HSV-1. Someone with HSV-1 can transmit the virus through oral contact with another person’s genitals, anus, or mouth, even if they don’t have sores that are visible at the time. It is important to note, too, that the virus can be transmitted orally, to the genitals, during oral sex. Recently, Valtrex (an antiviral drug used to treat herpes) was found to help reduce the risk of transmission. That’s oral herpes, almost always caused HSV-1 and contracted in childhood. HSV-1 spreads like wildfire among kids – it’s passed by the briefest skin-to-skin contact, as simple as one HSV-carrying child touching a sore and then another kid in class.
