Imaging Herpes Simplex Encephalitis

Herpes simplex (HSV) encephalitis is the most common cause of fatal sporadic fulminant necrotizing viral encephalitis and has characteristic imaging findings. In adults, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) accounts for 95 of all fatal cases of sporadic encephalitis and usually results from reactivation of the latent virus.

Herpes Simplex Encephalitis: Diffusion Mr Imaging Findings

MR Imaging of Human Herpesvirus-6Associated Encephalitis in 4 Patients with Anterograde Amnesia after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem-Cell Transplantation. CSF PCR was negative for herpes simplex virus (HSV) , cytomegalovirus (CMV) , varicella-zoster virus (HZV) , enterovirus, and human herpesvirus 8.

Diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis by magnetic resonance imaging and polymerase chain reaction assay of cerebrospinal fluid. J Neurol Sci 1998; 157: 148. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in eight patients with herpes simplex meningoencephalitis were reviewed: 14 examinations were analysed. A differential diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) and multifocal infiltrative glioma was entertained. CT head imaging shows hypodense lesions of the temporal lobe and orbitofrontal regions and may demonstrate mass effect. We studied five patients with herpes simplex encephalitis type 1 with diffusion-weighted MR imaging, as this sequence provides information regarding tissue integrity. Eight patients with herpes simplex encephalitis among the 10 cases diagnosed at the University of Kansas Medical Center from 1966 to 1976 were studied with 99mTc early in their diagnostic work-up.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Encephalitis

Use of Clinical and Neuroimaging Characteristics to Distinguish Temporal Lobe Herpes Simplex Encephalitis From Its Mimics. Felicia C. Case History: A 65-year-old patient with history of altered behavior and memory loss for 15 days. Four patients with clinical and serologically proven Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (HSE) were examined by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) following Computed Tomographic (CT) scans. Publication Diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis by magnetic resonance imaging and polymerase chain reaction assay of cerebrospinal fluid. A more serious sequela of HSV-1 infection is herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). Arguably even more important in diagnosis is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. With modern neuroimaging techniques, HSV-1 encephalitis is only rarely confused with cerebritis, abscess, tumor or infarction. Figure 1 shows typical CT and MRI changes in patients with HSV-1 encephalitis compared with imaging abnormalities in VZV vasculopathy (see below) and other viral encephalitides.
