Mollaret Meningitis With Orolabial Herpes

Mollaret’s Meningitis has been associated with the Human Herpes Virus, including HSV-1 and HSV-2 (either of which can cause orolabial herpes, commonly known as cold sores or genital herpes) , Varicella zoster virus (which causes chicken-pox and shingles) , Epstein-Barr virus (which causes mononucleosis) and the less known Cytomegalovirus (affecting the salivary glands). Hence, the name Mollaret meningitis is frequently associated with the syndrome. The reactivation of HSV-1 results in herpes labialis or, less frequently, in stomatitis, keratoconjunctivitis, or genital herpes. I have endured four episodes of viral meningitis within the past two years. I informed my Neurologist of my recent herpes diagnosis; he ran a PCR test on my spinal fluid and said the HSV 2 virus was indeed present, and at that point he diagnosed me with Mollaret’s Meningitis.

What Is Mollaret’s Meningitis?

Aseptic meningitis occurs in 36 of women with primary HSV-2 genital infection and 13 of men5; it results in hospitalization for 6. Herpes simplex virus type 2 is not the only virus responsible for Mollaret meningitis, and some authorities have suggested that the term be restricted to recurrent aseptic meningitis without an identifiable cause. A clinical trial of oral valacyclovir after intravenous acyclovir for 14 to 21 days is currently being conducted to determine whether prolonged antiviral therapy will improve the outcome and decrease the recurrence rate. Other disorders such as herpetic whitlow, herpes gladiatorum, ocular herpes (keratitis) , cerebral herpes infection encephalitis, Mollaret’s meningitis, neonatal herpes, and possibly Bell’s palsy are all caused by herpes simplex viruses. Oral herpes, the visible symptoms of which are known as cold sores, infects the face and mouth.

Mollaret Meningitis With Orolabial Herpes And Large Lysed Ghost Cells

The most common is HSV-1, which usually causes oral outbreaks around the lips and mouth. HSV-1: herpes labialis most common form of recurrent HSV-1, but 30 of genital HSV is HSV-1. Benign recurrent lymphocytic meningitis (BRLM, Mollaret’s meningitis) 4: We look at all of the symptoms of herpes, including both oral herpes and genital herpes symptoms. In very rare cases, herpes meningitis may be recurrent. This is known as Mollaret Meningitis. Recent data suggest that Herpes simplex Type II and, less frequently, Herpes simplex Type I may be etiologic in some if not most cases of Mollarets meningitis. However, acyclovir (intravenous or oral) or valacyclovir (oral only) are worthy of consideration for both therapy and prophylaxis. HSV viruses have been linked to Recurrent Lymphocytic Meningitis, also known as Mollaret’s meningitis. It is characterised by sudden attacks of meningitis symptoms that usually last for 2-7 days and are separated by symptom free intervals lasting for weeks, months or years. Oral and genital herpes is usually diagnosed based on the presenting symptoms. HSV-2 is the most common cause of Mollaret’s meningitis, a type of recurrent viral meningitis.
