Oral Herpes Infection Symptoms

Oral herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. It also can cause symptoms such as fever and muscle aches. The herpes simplex virus affects only humans. Primary infection: The virus enters your skin or mucous membrane and reproduces. During this stage, oral sores and other symptoms, such as fever, may develop.

Oral herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, characterized by an eruption of small and usually painful blisters on the skin of the lips, mouth, gums or the skin around the mouth. The initial infection may cause no symptoms or mouth ulcers. The main symptom of oral infection is inflammation of the mucosa of the cheek and gumsknown as acute herpetic gingivostomatitiswhich occurs within 510 days of infection. While symptoms of oral herpes most commonly appear on or around the lips, oral herpes is not always limited to this area. You have most likely seen someone experiencing an oral herpes outbreak before.

Herpes viruses typically infect the oral or genital mucosa. Most oral herpes virus infections are due to the virus known as HSV-1, while genital herpes virus infections are most often caused by HSV-2. The herpes simplex virus, also known as HSV, is an infection that causes herpes. Herpes appear most commonly on the genitals or mouth. Many people don’t get any symptoms the first time they get oral herpes (primary infection) and the infection goes unnoticed. However for some people, the primary infection can cause symptoms and make them feel unwell.

HSV is very contagious and can be spread by direct contact with sores and sometimes by contact with the oral and genital areas of people who have chronic HSV infection even when no sores are can be seen. The primary infection may not cause symptoms at all. If it does, blisters may appear near or on the mouth within one to three weeks after first contact with the virus. Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blisters that develop around the lips or inside the mouth. Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV infection is passed on through skin-to-skin contact such as kissing. Most new cases of genital herpes infection do not cause symptoms, and many people infected with HSV-2 are unaware that they have genital herpes. If the primary (initial) oral infection causes symptoms, they can be very painful, particularly in small children.

Herpes Simplex Virus Infections

Not everyone infected with HSV-1 or -2 will have symptoms of oral herpes, but many do. Between 2 and 20 days after contact with a person infected with the herpes virus, you may feel a burning or stinging sensation around your mouth. Vesicular lesions (These develop on the oral mucosa, tongue, and lips and later rupture and coalesce, leaving ulcerated plaques. HSV-2 infection can cause similar symptoms and can be associated with orogenital contact or can occur concurrently with genital herpes. HSV-1 more commonly affects the area around the mouth, while HSV-2 is more likely to affected the genital area, but both viruses can affect either region. The course and symptoms of herpes infections vary widely from being completely asymptomatic throughout a person’s life in 80 of patients, to having frequent recurrences. Symptoms include painful blisters (vesicles) on the lip or under the nose that ulcerate and crust over. There are distinct patterns of disease with oral HSV infections, depending on whether the infection is a new one (primary disease) or recurrent. The primary episode of either genital or oral herpes often causes painful blisters and flulike symptoms Table 01. Symptoms of an initial herpes outbreak generally occur within two weeks after infection, and are usually more severe than subsequent recurrences. A substantial portion of the population has recurrent oral herpes infection, showing up as those nuisance little cold sores on lips and sides of the mouth, and occasionally elsewhere on the face. FIRST POINT: PEOPLE WHO HAVE SYMPTOMS OF HERPES INFECTIONS EITHER ON THE FACE OR ON THE GENITALIA SHOULD REFRAIN FROM ALLOWING THESE AREAS TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH A SIGNIFICANT OTHER DURING INTIMATECONTACT. It is only possible to diagnose herpes simplex when symptoms are present so dont delay. So a person with a genital infection can kiss or perform oral sex – there is no risk of infecting a partner; the virus will not travel inside the body from the genitals to the mouth. As well as genital herpes, HSV can infect the mouth and cause cold sores. The initial infection that causes herpes symptoms is usually most severe as the body’s immune system has not yet come into contact with the herpes virus.
