Treatment Of Herpes Zoster Postherpetic Neuralgia

With postherpetic neuralgia, a complication of herpes zoster, pain may persist well after resolution of the rash and can be highly debilitating. Herpes zoster is usually treated with orally administered acyclovir. Treatment with acyclovir, famciclovir, or valacyclovir decreases the duration of the rash. Immunization to prevent herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia is recommended for most adults 60 years and older. Early recognition and treatment can reduce acute symptoms and may also reduce PHN.

Treatment for postherpetic neuralgia depends on the type and characteristics of pain experienced by the patient. Possible options include: Antiviral agents, such as famciclovir, are given at the onset of attacks of herpes zoster to shorten the clinical course and to help prevent complications such as postherpetic neuralgia. Currently, there’s no cure for postherpetic neuralgia, but there are treatment options to ease symptoms. Herpes zoster (shingles) affects up to half of all people who live to 85 years of age and can lead to long term morbidity. Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) represents a continuum of pain that never resolved following the acute episode of herpes zoster. Uncommonly, after resolution of acute neuritis, there is a recurrence of pain at the same site of the original zoster lesions 4.
